Sir Bobby Charlton wins inaugural Global Ambassador Award at the Football Business Awards

Find A Better Way founder Sir Bobby Charlton CBE  has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to football and his extensive humanitarian work.

Sir Bobby was presented with the Global Ambassador Award at the Football Business Awards. Sir Bobby received the award both for his outstanding contribution to the game but also for his extensive humanitarian work, primarily through his Knutsford based charity, Find A Better Way.

Find A Better Way was founded after Sir Bobby visited a minefield in Cambodia, witnessing first-hand the damage caused by landmines in current and former areas of conflict. Consequently the charity is now a major funding body for research at several leading UK universities, including research into engineering biological replacement limbs. Find A Better Way also raises funds for education and victim recovery projects.

The Football Business Awards created its Global Ambassador award to reflect its own ethos – that the influence of elite football extends beyond the stadium. The economic impact of football is significant, creating and supporting vast employment, assisting urban regeneration and often helping create a city’s identity. Club Community Schemes and CSR projects are a key part of this, changing lives and inspiring people through football’s unique and extensive ability to create an emotional connection between fans.

When the awards judges and opinion leaders in football were asked who should be nominated for this award, Sir Bobby was overwhelming choice.

Simon Burton, Director of the Football Business Awards explained ‘Sir Bobby Charlton embodies everything that is good about football’s power to impact positively on people’s lives. He was a gentleman on the pitch and continues to be so off it, using the voice he earned through football to inform and inspire people for an amazing cause.’

The Football Business Awards – the leading celebration of commercial and community work in British football – attracted a star studded audience to Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea FC.
